ok, someone explain to me the concept of "friends only" journals? I do not understand the concept of making it "friends only" when most people are willing to add you the minute you ask - hardly a friend then am i? I wonder why do it then?

is there some reason that has yet been untold to the greater community - or is it that people like me who have a web based journal think it is kind of an oxymoron to have a web based journal that is closed to people unless they ask to be added on? I am confused and it shites me up the wall to be honest...

i have only recently started venturing into the LJ world to add more Melb people in the hopes of one day maybe building a friendship out of it and it is very time consuming to be searching through profiles etc only to get to their journal only to find it locked...maybe i won't like you as a "friend" so i dont' want to read your journal anyway you self important bugger grrr..look at me getting so irrate -

i know i have a few "friends" listed who have "friends only" journals - can you please share with me why? you went down that path? is there a greater mystery to it? are you hiding things behind all that html code that we should know about? or maybe i am just one of the lucky ones who hasn't copped exlovers spamming me and making my life hell???

Thoughts anyone - sorry if i have offended!!! wasn't my intention!!

hugs and kisses

Good points. I'm interested to see the responses you get on the 'friends only' thing.

Hi :)

My journal wasn't friend's only for ages and I wanted to keep it like that. A group of people from my past found my journal, including an ex of mine who I am very scared of (long story). I felt too stressed to write anything in my journal that was personal. I also got some verbal abuse from these people, after they read my journal. I had to make my journal private, as It was causing me too much stress. If this hadn't happened, I wouldn't ever have a friend's only journal. I agree with you too, but I had to do this sadly :(

By the way, no offense taken at all :)

No offence taken at all :-) I am one of these "friends only" people however, a general portion of my posts are open to the public (silly quizzes, generic musings and tasty recipes). It would be more correct to say that I have a friends "filter" on my journal.

It wasn't always thus. I think I'm a little bit of a control freak and some of the things I write about I find a little personal. Impersonal enough to write about in a semi-public forum and too personal for open viewing on the web. My views on this waiver occasionally as I am a general voyeur and love to read even the most mundane "everyday" posts that other people write. Even if I don't know the author.

I also like the idea that there is some esoteric exchange of value in this "friending" process. There is the participation and unsaid expectation that someone else will "friend" you once you have added them and in return, reveal to you a secret layer of info in their protected posts.

I like the idea of an open journal with the occasional 'filted' post....eg. an entry that only the pagan people on my list can read.

I don't get the point of people having a friends only journal and then adding anyone who asks.....that just defeats the point hey? Especially if the person isn't who they claim to be...

Also, I leave the really juicy stuff off livejournal....there are ways to find posts so my secrets are best kept to myself ;)

Well...I had my journal as a "friends only" journal for a very short time about two years ago because of this stupid controversy I was dealing with IRL and a lot of people from that found my online journal. I finally got to the point, though, where I was like, "Y'know what? Fuck you if you don't like what I have to say!" It's a very rare occasion when I do post something that's "friends only" now. I think I'll go ahead and add you to my friends list anyway, though. I love all of the artwork you have on your website and you seem to be a well adjusted person all around. ;) My name is Dev, by the way.
